While predominantly identified as an opposition figure, Odinga assumed the role of head of government in 2008 and also formed a political pact with the leader last year in a public service marked by changing partnerships.

He inspired intense commitment among supporters, especially in his ethnic group based in western Kenya, many of whom believe he was deprived of the presidency by election irregularities.
