The Two Fatalities Revealed in Brown University Attack as Authorities Continue Search for Killer.
The pair of scholars who lost their lives in Saturday’s mass shooting at Brown University were being remembered Monday – as a manhunt for their shooter persisted following the freeing by local law enforcement of the sole person detained in connection in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was remembered as “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, per the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which paid tribute to her at a service on Sunday.
Cook was the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of College Republicans of America, as the club stated. The White House press secretary also posted condolences on social media, saying in part: “It's indescribable. Thinking of her kin and peers, above all her mom and dad.”
MukhammadAziz Umurzokov
The other deceased individual was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his first year of studies at the prestigious university, according to relatives.
The victim's identification was officially acknowledged by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He had big dreams of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and helping people,” his sibling Samira said in a online post.
The Shooting Incident
Nine more persons were injured in Saturday’s attack in the engineering building of Brown’s university in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Authorities said by the end of Sunday that a man aged 24 arrested in a raid at a lodging about around 27 kilometers from the university earlier in the day was being released.
“A perpetrator remains free,” declared Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.
Neronha explained, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you must reassess and go in another, and this is precisely what occurred over the last day or so.”
Public Fear
The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “This will probably generate new worry for our community”.
The shooter opened fire inside a classroom in the building on Saturday afternoon, firing more than 40 rounds from a handgun, a police source reported to the media outlet.
Officers that raided the inn seized a pair of pistols and two loaded 30-round magazines when the person of interest was detained, according to reports.
The Wounded Victims
Among those wounded, a single scholar was allowed to go home, mentioned Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in critical but stable condition, and one was in critical condition, officials reported on Sunday.
A private school, a private academy in the city of Durham, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.
More Condolences
Tributes were paid to Cook at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only here growing up... but at Brown University she was an incredible light in that particular place as well.”
The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the group. “She was famed for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she worked for her branch and other students,” he said.
The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by Umurzokov’s death in a message. “Our profound condolences go out to the Umurzokov family, companions, and schoolmates and grieve for of his promising future.”

The fatal shooting at Brown, the country's seventh most historic university with about 7,300 undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, happened during one of at least 392 mass shootings recorded nationally so far in 2025, according to data. The following Monday was the 349th day of the year.
